What on earth is she on about now I hear you ask.
10 years ago I had recently split up with my husband and I was desperate for work. I’d take anything, I’d photograph anything as long as I got paid, including 16 hour weddings! I knew I was good at portraits and smaller weddings, work in which I could really build a relationship with people. As for the rest that I didn’t enjoy so much - well, I did ok, didn’t I?
The trouble is that, for me, ok is simply not good enough. I need to wow people, I need people to feel fantastic and LOVE their images. I don’t work just for the money. I have to love what I do. And that’s why I love what I do now.
I market primarily to women over 45 - women who feel that they’ve lost sight of who they are, who’ve been looking after their families for so long that they’ve forgotten what it’s like to put themselves first; women who want to feel lovely again; women whose confidence has drip dripped away - their friends tell them that they’re beautiful but they just can’t see it. I also help women achieve visibility in business with headshots and personal branding that makes them and their business stand out.
I love to do other portraits too so to clarify I’ve divided my work into 3 groups:
Who I market to - women over 45, beauty (individuals and groups) and boudoir, and business portraits.
What I don’t market to but still love and will happily do - men, young people and children,small weddings.
What I don’t do - Large weddings, large family groups, products and events - I’m very happy to recommend those to other photographers. There’s enough work out there for everyone and I truly believe that you can’t be brilliant at everything.
Our clients deserve the best and when someone offers us money we should have their best interests at heart, and if we know someone else can do a better job, then share the love. It can be a tough thing to do - especially if you need the business. But it’s the RIGHT thing to do.
As for clients - you know that you get what you pay for. If you want quality , hire a specialist.
